What does “Gas Safe” mean? You’ve probably heard the term “ Gas Safe engineer ”, but what does it actually mean? In the UK, anyone who works on gas appliances legally must be Gas Safe registered. This replaced the old CORGI system back in 2009. Why is Gas Safe registration so important? Working with gas is dangerous if it’s done incorrectly. An unqualified engineer could put your home at risk of: Gas leaks Carbon monoxide poisoning Fires or explosions Gas Safe engineers are fully trained, tested, and qualified to work safely on your boiler, heating, and gas appliances. How do you check if someone is Gas Safe? Every Gas Safe engineer carries an ID card with a licence number and the types of work they’re qualified for. You can also check online at the Gas Safe Register website. Why choose Intercity Gas? For peace of mind this winter, make sure your boiler is in the hands of a Gas Safe engineer. Service vs. repair: unders tanding the basics It’s easy to confuse a boiler service with a boiler repair, but they’re very different. Knowing the difference can save you money and help you make the right call. What is a boiler service? A service is preventative. It’s a routine check-up carried out once a year to: Insp ect parts for wear and tear Test safety devices and controls Clean key components Check e fficiency and emissions Think of it like a car MOT, it keeps things running smoothly and legally safe. What is a boiler repair? A repair is reactive. It’s when something has already gone wrong like having no hot water, hearing strange noises, or faced with a complete breakdown. The engineer diagnoses the issue and replaces or fixes faulty parts. Which one do you need? If your boiler is working fine but it’s been a year or more since the last check: you need a service. If your boiler has developed a fault or stopped working : you need a repair. Sometimes, both are required — a repair now, and a service later to prevent repeat issues. Why choose Intercity Gas? We handle both servicing and repairs, across all boiler brands. Our engineers are known for their quick turnaround and honest advice, we won’t replace parts unnecessarily and we’ll always explain your options clearly. The cold truth about winter breakdowns There’s never a good time for your boiler to stop working but in the middle of a freezing UK winter, it can be more than inconvenient. Emergency callouts are expensive, parts can take longer to source, and you may even be left without heating or hot water for days. That’s why a pre-winter boiler service is one of the smartest investments you can make. Prevent costly boiler/heating repairs before they happen A boiler service gives your engineer the chance to spot small issues before they become big problems. For example: A minor pressure issue today could become a full breakdown in winter Sludge build-up in your system could reduce efficiency and increase bills A faulty seal could create safety risks if left unchecked Catching these early saves you both money and stress. Improve efficiency and lower bills A boiler that’s running efficiently uses less energy. At a time when fuel bills are a major household concern, an annual service can literally pay for itself through reduced running costs. Keep your warranty valid Most manufacturers require an annual service to keep the warranty intact. Missing one could mean footing the bill yourself if the boiler develops a fault. Why choose Intercity Gas? Intercity Gas engineers service all major boiler brands. With decades of experience, fast turnaround times, and a reputation for problem-solving, you can trust us to keep your heating system in top condition for the cold months ahead. Book your boiler service today and enjoy peace of mind this winter.

Don’t replace what can be repaired Being told you need a new boiler is enough to make anyone worry and it’s likely to be a major expense, especially in winter. But the truth is, not every fault means replacement. In fact, many boilers can be repaired quickly and affordably, if you have the right engineer. Common issues that can be fixed Boiler not firing up? Often caused by ignition or sensor issues. Losing pressure? Usually linked to valves, seals, or small leaks. No hot water? Could be as simple as a diverter valve or thermostat fault. Strange noises? Often sludge in the system, fixable with cleaning and flushing. These are problems that can be repaired without ripping out your entire heating system. Why some engineers push replacements Not all engineers want to spend the time diagnosing complex faults. Replacing the boiler can sometimes be quicker for them, but far more expensive for you. The Intercity Gas difference We pride ourselves on being problem solvers . If there’s a safe, reliable repair option, we’ll find it. Of course, if a boiler really is beyond repair, we’ll be upfront about that too, but you can be confident you’re getting honest advice. Before you commit to a costly replacement, call Intercity Gas for a second opinion.
